Alberto Santos-Dumont was an early pioneer of aviation. In addition to his work in airships, he made the first public flight of an airplane in Europe on October 23, 1906. Santos-Dumont is considered the “Father of Aviation” not only in Brazil, but also in Europe.

He designed and built a house in Petropolis, Brasil where he lived until his death in 1932. In addition to numerous innovations throughout the structure, he designed a space-efficient flight of stairs that led up to the front door.
